Rev Doug Newman and Julie Newman

The Reverend Doug Newman and his wife Julie Newman joined our church on December 14, 2017 when Doug took up his role as the new Rector of the Anglican Parish of Batemans Bay.

Doug and Julie were previously leading St Paul's Ginninderra, in Spence ACT from December 2008. St Paul’s is a vibrant Anglican church with a heart for mission to the local community and a range of traditional, contemporary and charismatic worship to inform and sustain that mission focus. Doug and Julie have three adult sons, two daughter-in-laws and three grandchildren, all living in Canberra. Our third son, James went home to Glory in 2006 aged 20.

Doug and Julie feel strongly called and are making a long-term plan to be in the Bay. They are purchasing a home within the parish. Doug has a diverse background with a career in the Air Force before being a Public Servant and then Consultant in Canberra. His ministry began at St Simon’s Kaleen and has included extensive lay and ordained leadership in the Anglican Cursillo Movement and in Kairos Prison ministry. His flexible work arrangements as a consultant provided the self-funding for a significant time of part time non-stipendiary ordained ministry prior to being appointed as Rector of Ginninderra. Julie has led in Cursillo and Kairos as well and is a foundation team member and leader in the Fruit of the Spirit Women’s Ministry (FOTSWM). FOTSWM is an ecumenical ministry of encouragement to women within the church, and from time to time runs Women’s Retreat Days.

Doug and Julie have a passion to see the local church working together in unity (Ephesians 3: 10 – 11) and believe that we are called to work into a local context that the Kingdom of God might be increasingly visible in our city. We are excited by what we have seen so far and look for the opportunities to focus and expand our relationships within the parish congregations, with the wider church, and into our new local community. We are waiting on God to inspire and direct us in this.

Doug enjoys Family History research and dreams of resuming a passion for fishing. Julie is creative and artistic and plans for a dedicated art room. The Easter/ Pentecost banner made by Julie was presented to the church from St Paul’s in anticipation of what God might do in this new season.
